Sending & domains

Send from your own domain with managed deliverability, or from a connected Gmail or Microsoft 365 mailbox. Replies come back into Hermes either way.

Every trigger sends as a sender identity — a from-address plus display name. Identities come in three flavors, and an organization can have several with one default.

Sender typeBest for
Your own domainProduct and marketing email at volume — [email protected] with managed deliverability.
GmailFounder-style outreach from a real mailbox you already own.
Microsoft 365Same, for Outlook / Microsoft shops.

Sending from your own domain

Add your domain under Settings → Email → Domains and Hermes provisions everything deliverability needs on its managed infrastructure:

Add your domain

Enter the domain you want to send from (e.g. yourcompany.com). Hermes generates the exact DNS records to add.

Add the DNS records

You'll get a short list: DKIM records that cryptographically sign your mail, an SPF record authorizing Hermes to send for the domain, a DMARC record, and an MX record on a reply subdomain (reply.yourcompany.com) so replies route back into Hermes.

Hermes can detect your DNS provider and plan the exact changes for you; at supporting registrars, Domain Connect makes it a one-click apply.

Verify

Hermes polls DNS and flips the domain to verified automatically — or hit Verify to check on demand (hermes domains verify yourcompany.com from the CLI). Once verified, create sender identities on the domain: notify@, hello@, whatever you need.

A domain can only be attached to one Hermes organization — ownership is enforced globally, so someone else can't send as your domain.

Sending from Gmail or Microsoft 365

Connect a mailbox with OAuth under Settings → Email — no passwords, no SMTP configuration. Hermes requests send permission only, stores tokens encrypted, and flags the connection in the dashboard if it ever needs re-authorization.

Emails sent this way come from your real mailbox, threaded like any mail you'd send yourself — which is exactly what you want for low-volume, high-touch outreach.

Replies and the inbox

Replies to domain-based sends route back through the reply subdomain and land in the Hermes Inbox as conversation threads. That matters twice over:

  • For you — read and track customer replies without leaving the dashboard.
  • For the AI — the evaluator and drafter read each person's thread history. Someone who replied isn't re-prompted like a stranger, and follow-ups build on the conversation instead of restarting it.

Compliance defaults

Marketing email gets an unsubscribe link and RFC 8058 one-click unsubscribe headers (the native "Unsubscribe" button in Gmail and Apple Mail) automatically. Opt-outs apply organization-wide and are enforced both before drafting and again at the moment of sending. Transactional email — password resets, usage alerts, activity-driven messages — is exempt by design. You choose the category per trigger.
